Sixpoint Brewery Night Ot 3rd!

Sixpoint Brewery will be coming to Mudville next week for our event on Oct 3rd!

The Sixpoint Door

The name "Sixpoint" is by no means an insignificant nomenclature - it is connected to a symbol that has been synonymous with the craft of brewing going back centuries. Since at least the year 1300, brewers adorned their barrels and breweries with a six-pointed star. By the 1500s, the star became the official insignia of the Brewer's Guild, one of the first trade guilds of Europe. The star symbolized the purity of the craft, and folklore claims the six individual points each represent six different critical elements of the craft itself: grain, water, hops, yeast, malt, and the brewer.

Since 2004, Sixpoint has made hundreds of different beers, and there is no plan to stop this proliferation of styles. Their core brews are available year-round, but they also have rotating and seasonal varieties. In addition, they have several unique ongoing series of beers and super rare brews that are made one time only. Find out more about these wide range of styles and their availability and format under their Beer Menu.

Great Divide Beers on Tap!!

Starting Weds July 18th, we have special beers on tap from Great Divide Brewing Co! http://greatdivide.com/

CLAYMORE SCOTCH ALE: Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is Great Divide’s tribute to the legendary “Wee Heavy” beers of Scotland. This malty, deep-ruby beauty features lots of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile, and a subtle warming character. 7.7%

BELGIAN YETI: A delicious new blend of brewing traditions – all the malt-driven roastiness of Great Divide’s Yeti Imperial Stout with characteristic spice and fruit notes imparted by their special Belgian yeast strain. Belgian Style Yeti is a one-of-a-kind beer as mysterious as the mythical creature himself. Impossible? See for yourself; you’ll be a believer, too. 9.5%

HADES: A Belgian-Style golden ale brewed with a rare Belgian yeast strain that gives a complex spicy flavor and aroma. Noticeable hops and medium malt character make it a very well balanced, crisp ale. 7.8%

RUMBLE IPA: An American IPA with subtle nuance. Brewed with heavy handed additions of Pacific Northwest hops, this beer is gently aged on French and American oak resulting in a wonderful balance of bitterness, caramel sweetness, vanilla, and undertones of pine and citrus. Very inspiring. 7.1%

TITAN IPA: A big, aggressively hopped India Pale Ale brewed for hop disciples. It starts out with piney hop aromas and citrus hop flavors, and finishes with a nice rich, malty sweetness that is balanced with crisp hop bitterness. 7.1%

HERCULES DOUBLE IPA: Not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 10%

SAMURAI: This is an easy drinking, unfiltered ale that changes the status quo for unfiltered beers. The addition of rice gives Samurai a slightly fruity, crisp, refreshing and clean taste. This is definitely not your everyday unfiltered beer. 5.5%

Rogue's Oregasmic Ale

New this week in Mudville9 is the Rogue "Oregasmic" which is an American pale ale from Oregon (http://www.rogue.com/)

This brew is made from 100% Oregon ingredients -- Rogue grows their own Dare and Risk malts and Willamette and Sterling hops which are unique to the brewery and coastal waters. Even the yeast is from Oregon! The beer pours a hazy red orange with spicy hop notes and caramel malt aromas. Pairs perfect with ribs - so come on in for a great meal!

Jonas Bronck "Pelham Bay" IPA

Right now, Mudville has the Jonas Bronck "Pelham Bay" IPA on tap. This beer is brewed right here in the Bronx by a small, dedicated brew team.

Jonas Bronck was a brewer in the early 1600's and owned 500 acres of land in the Bronx (when it was still called New Netherlands). The Jonas Bronck brewers name all of their beers after Bronx areas and landmarks… explaining the meaning behind "Pelham Bay." This beer is an American IPA with better balance and less bitterness than a typical American IPA, making it much easier to enjoy and more like an English IPA.

These brewers are incredibly small and local which makes this offering special and pretty hard to find outside of New York.  Stop in this week or weekend to enjoy a glass!

Oskar Blues Brewery at Mudville

This week, we have 6 new beers on tap from Oskar Blues Brewery:
  • Dale's pale ale (ABV 6.5%)
  • Mama's Little Yella Pilsner (ABV 5.3%)
  • Old Chub Scotch Ale (ABV 8%)
  • G'knight imperial Red (ABV 8.7%)
  • Gubna Imperial IPA (ABV 10)
  • Deviant Dale's IPA (ABV 8%)

Launched in April, Deviant Dale's is new to the NYC market and I would strongly recommend it! It's a hopped up version of the Pale Ale, with aromas of citrus, grapefruit rind and piney resins and a copper ball-of-fire color. Deviant Dale's was the 2011 GABF Silver Medal Winner (American IPA Category).

I also love the G'Knight Imperial Red. It was the 2010 World Beer Chapmionship Gold medal winner. G'Knight is a hefty, dry hopped double-red ale with a nose full of aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. G’Knight sports a surprisingly sensuous finish for a beer of its size.

Tröegs DreamWeaver Wheat

We currently have many Tröegs beers on tap at Mudville 9 and I am making my way through enjoying them all. My newest favorite is DreamWeaver Wheat.

DreamWeaver Wheat pours into the glass in a hazy golden straw hue with a white head that quickly dissipates into a thin layer of lacing on the surface. When I take a sniff, I smell a strong wheat with hints of banana and lemon scent. When I take my first sip, I detect a sweet malt and wheat taste. This quickly subsides to a fruity taste that is very enjoyable.

I would say this is the perfect warm-weather drink and at 4.8% ABV, you can pair this with your lunch without having to worry about becoming too drunk in the daytime. I would pair this with some hot BBQ wings as the sweeter taste will balance out the spice.

Troegs Troegenator

A new beer we have on tap at Mudville 9 is Troegs Troegenator. Troegenator pours into the glass in a very dark mahogany color that is rather beautiful as a beer. There is also very little head when poured into the glass. It smells of dark fruits with a hint of smoke/roasted flavor.

Taking the first sip, I detect a heavy hand of that same dark fruit flavor that came through in the scent. It is medium-bodied with a malty goodness up front. There is a hint of sweetness that melds with the alcohol to yield a rum-like spiciness. The beer is very thick and has an 8.2% ABV. This beer would pair very well with a dessert or you can drink it as your dessert!

Firestone Walker Double Jack

A new beer we just put on tap is Firestone Walker Brewing Co.’s Double Jack. With 9.5% ABV, this is a strong beer and should not be taken lightly. It is brewed in California and made year-round.

Double Jack pours out as a beautiful golden amber into the glass with a modest head. The beer smells of citrus with a strong scent of hops mixed in. The first taste I took gave me hints of grapefruit and pineapple, followed by caramel and some bitter orange rind. It is very rich with a sharp flavor but then mellowed by the warm malt.

It goes down very smoothly and pairs amazingly with barbeque. I would pair this with a sweet barbeque chicken wing or merely drink it on its own. I think this is a great beer for summer because of the hints of fruit flavor throughout the beer.

UnderDog

Tonight, at Mudville 9, we have Flying Dog Brewery Night and are featuring two beers by the brewery- Wildeman and UnderDog. I decided to tell you a little about UnderDog and why I like it.

Flying Dog UnderDog is an American Pale Ale that pairs exceptionally well with barbeque, one reason why its a perfect beer to have on tap here. The beer pours into the glass as a beautiful, clear gold color with a nice, billowy white head. Upon first taste, it goes down incredibly smoothly and is very refreshing. UnderDog is very light in taste and great for the warm temperatures we have been enjoying. After the first initial taste, I noticed a moderately spicy and slightly citric bite which I enjoyed profusely.

This is a great beer to pair with your meal any time of the year, but especially Summer since it is so refreshing. We look forward to pouring you a glass.

The Bitter End Pale Ale

We now have The Bitter End Pale Ale on tap and it is delicious. It is a very clear, auburn color. It smells of citrus and pine with a small note of sweet caramel.

The first taste is a very light pale malt taste which leads to a slight bitterness that is not too overpowering. The beer leaves a very mild bitter after taste and is incredibly refreshing to drink. It is not too extreme in either the malt or hop direction. The Bitter End Pale Ale is very easy to drink and great to try if you are not incredibly familiar with many craft beers.

At just over 5% alcohol, this is a great beer to pair with a meal. I paired it with a Buffalo Chicken Salad, but it would go well with any of the many salads we have on our menu. Come on in soon to try The Bitter End Pale Ale.

Dead Guy Ale

We recently just added Rogue Ales’ Dead Guy Ale to our list of on-tap beer and it is crisp and refreshing, just in time for the beautiful weather we are having today. The beer is a beautiful medium orange with a golden glow and a very clean scent.

Initially, it tastes of toasted malts, with some floral and spicy malts midway through. Dead Guy Ale has a very balanced taste where neither the crisp hops or sweet malt overpowers the other. The beer goes down incredibly smoothly with a full and hearty flavor that doesn’t over-intensify your palate. I would pair this with any meat or fish- try it with our beer battered cod!

Troegs Nugget Nectar

One of our new beers on tap here at Mudville 9 is Troegs Nugget Nectar and I highly suggest you try it. Before today, I had never tried this but now I will definitely be ordering it a lot.

The beer pours into a nice amber color with a pleasant, but not strong scent. It has a very strong, hoppy taste that lingers in your mouth and is quite delicious. It pairs very well with both poultry and cheddar cheese so I recommend trying this with Mudville’s wings (I prefer sweet BBQ) and their cheddar cheese fries.

At 7.5% alcohol- which you cannot taste- I think this is the perfect beer to pair with a meal. It is crisp and clean and will not leave your mouth feeling overpowered. This is a must-try next time you’re in Mudville 9, but since we change our beers up pretty often, better come in soon!
